Free txt service from PC > mobile using Twitter

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

Need to text someone, but don’t want to waste your precious 20c? Here’s a way to exploit Twitter’s free SMS service in a simple, fast and convenient way (after it’s set up anyway).

  1. Sign up two Twitter accounts, A and B.
  2. Add the mobile to account A (and verify it).
  3. Set account A to follow account B.
  4. Set account B to protected (optional).
  5. Open Notepad and copy the contents of this file into it.
  6. Go to Twitlet.com, click “Create” and enter the details of account B.
  7. Right click the link that pops up and copy the link location (“shortcut” in IE).
  8. Search for “updates/?a=” and copy everything from the “=” sign to the “&” sign.
  9. Replace “insert value here” with the code you just copied.
  10. Replace “insert name here” with any description you like (eg. “text Jonathan”)
  11. Rename the file to a .htm or .html file.

Now double clicking this file will open it in your default browser, and any text typed into the box and submitted will be sent to the associated mobile.

You can copy and paste the “<button” line as many times as you like and replace with new account details. Note that you will need two separate accounts for every one mobile number.
