Rangitoto "Excursion"

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

As part of the Induction Week, on Feb 21/22 (weather dependent) I have to go to Rangitoto and climb to the top. Whoo-di-doo. This is supposedly the “group-bonding” activity?

 きのうの敵はきょうの友って
 古いコトバがあるけど
 きょうの友はあしたの友だち
 そうさ永遠に

“Yesterday’s enemies are today’s friends”
This is an old saying
But today’s friends are also tomorrow’s friends
Yes, even forever

The hills are alive…

My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds
That rise from the lake to the trees

My heart wants to sigh like a chime
That flies from a church on a breeze

To laugh like a brook when it trips and falls
Over stones on its way

To sing through the night
Like a lark who is learning to pray

After the long agonizing wait over the holidays, the results finally released. And, to my surprise (yes, really), this is what I saw:
2008 CIE Exam Results
So, I’m happy, and thanks to everyone who encouraged me during those hard times. (Studying is hard. I’m serious.)

so far so good

So I decided to set up a server at home on my new ADSL2+ connection. With my ~700kbps upload speed, I figure it can handle it.

After a lot of initial confusion about  how Linux works and setting up my network at the same time (switching from 10.0.0.x to 192.168.1.x network due to new modem), I finally got it to some sort of working stage. As you can see, it works! I noticed someone (next door neighbour?) was leeching my wireless connection. So, I set up a MAC address block. Nice and easy to deal with.

I should mention that Linux is really cool in that you don’t need to download software from the internet then install it. All you need is to type

apt-get install [program_name]

and it sets everything up for you, including downloading it. Thus, I got all the software necessary for running a server in a snap.

Now, what have I done in the holidays…

  • clocked n hours on UT2k4 (multiplayer via hamachi)
  • clocked a few hours on MapleStory (lv26 rogue on Bera)
  • clocked a few more hours on other games like Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 and Touhou Project series
  • got osu!DS to a state where gameplay is mostly fine, but many bugs to still figure out
  • built this new pc

… basically I’ve done nothing. Maybe I should try to find a job >.>

What can you expect me to do these holidays? Well, exam results coming out tomorrow, that’ll be interesting. Scholarship results still have a week? Two weeks? No idea. Hopefully I’ll get into AP, and don’t have to pay much fees. (read:goodresultsgoodresultsgoodresults)

Oh, I almost forgot about family camp (what do they call it now? Life camp?) and our small trip to Napier via Rotorua and Hamilton. Hamilton Gardens was pretty nice. We had a swim and spa in Rotorua… at the motel. Napier… we went and saw the gannets, then toured the city by ourselves. I drove the whole way back, which surprisingly only took 6 hours, and we also stopped a couple of times. I’d say driving from Napier to Auckland only takes 5 and a half hours. Top speed… I nearly hit 130km/h. I noticed most cars were going 120km/h anyway =.=
