So in the end I did buy Achron, but I haven’t had time to play it in depth yet. The time travel mechanism is pretty interesting, though at the same time it’s pretty tricky to get it right. Jumping to the appropriate time, making sure you have enough time to issue orders before the time wave passes, etc. all need some tinkering with in order to play at an above average level.
Today (as in 3am “day”), I discovered that my new Netgear DGN2000 is very likely the cause of what seemed like a hdd problem on my server. I had replaced my modem + switch + wireless AP set up with that since my old modem died on Saturday. So right now I’m using my really old ADSL modem + wireless AP. Hopefully I’ll get a replacement soon. Or maybe I’ll just get a refund. I was under the impression the DGN2000 had 10/100/1000 ethernet ports but it turns out it only has 10/100.
Work is as monotonous as always, although I do learn quite a few things every day. Officially I finish this Friday, but I might still be ~20h short of 400h. Anyway, since it’s unlikely a summer scholarship will take 400h, I may as well do as much time now as I can. There’s a possibility I can get some one-off programming jobs after all.
3:40am, Echo out
Nearly forgot, thanks peppy for the Arashi CDs
Achron is a game that first caught my attention on Slashdot a few months back, and is now taking preorders for $20 USD, with full access to prerelease builds and other goodies as they get finished. The developers are aiming for a 1/1/11 release.
The game is more than intriguing and I’m very likely going to get it and give it a try.
edit: Well, one day later and it seems the price is now $30 USD. I’m pretty sure it was $20 yesterday though… Looks like I won’t be getting it any time soon after all D:
I posted this a day late.
Meanwhile, xkcd has much to say about my birthday (though it’s one day off).
A really big thank you (and a hug) to those who contributed to the PS2! =D
I recently wanted to format my Vista partition and use it for extra storage when I discovered that the Windows Boot Manager, responsible for starting up Windows, actually resided on the Vista partition rather than on my W7 partition. This meant that if I simply formatted the Vista partition, Windows 7 wouldn’t start and the BIOS loader would complain about a missing boot manager.
After searching through heaps of sites and not finding anything useful (with the possible exception of this forum post), it turns out that both the Windows Vista and Windows 7 installation DVDs contain a tool specifically for repairing system boot problems.
A quick deletion of the Vista partition followed by 2 (yes, 2, not 1) repairs from the Windows installation DVD essentially “moved” (actually recreated) the Windows Boot Manager on my Windows 7 partition. The first repair recovers the “lost” Windows 7 partition and requires a reboot. The second repair recreates the boot manager.
Of course, I still recommend you clone your entire disk before trying something like this. Memory is cheap, but data is priceless.
Another computer for my home, this time for my sister. For $600 it’s not a bad deal.
Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 @ 2.6GHz
MSI G41M4-F
2GB RAM
500GB Samsung HDD
Galaxy GeForce 9600GT OC
Every computer in my house has been upgraded/replaced, so I’m going to stop buying computers for another 5 years.
Yesterday I upgrade my PC as well. I have to say, I’m loving Windows 7 – it’s everything I want it to be.
For example, click+drag upwards on the taskbar opens the menu – simple, smooth and convenient. Opening recent files and folders has never been easier (using the Windows Explorer/Word/Visual Studio/etc. icons).
I also really love the auto maximise/restore functionality with windows. Instead of 5 clicks to move a maximised window from one screen to the other, now all it takes is just 1 – click, drag to top of next screen, release, done.
I didn’t have to install a single driver either, compared to XP/Vista when I had to track down drivers for printer, graphics card, sound card, etc. – now it automatically finds and installs an appropriate driver.
And it looks awesome too
Sorry Linux, you’re going to have to do better than Karmic if you want to take over the desktop GUI market (although it still has its place in the home server sector, imo ;P)
edit:
Thanks to MSDNAA for my two free serials
I upgraded my dad’s pc to Windows 7 today, and it went without a single hitch. I’m pretty happy with how Windows installations are improving. The clean install only took ~15 minutes, compared to the ~30 minute installation times for XP/Vista. All drivers installed automatically rather than requiring me to hunt them down one by one. It can even run Aero even though it’s only got a cheap integrated graphics card (this PC cost less than $400).
The new taskbar will take some getting used to, but other than that I don’t think there’ll be many problems adapting to Windows 7.
I went and bought a new PC for my home server. The old PC was running 700Mhz P3, 192MB RAM, 20GB IDE hdd. This one is a tad more powerful.
| Intel Celeron 430 1.8GHz | $80 |
| Kingston 1GB RAM | $40 |
| Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L mobo | $100 |
| 2x Western Digital 1TB hard drives | $280 |
| Cooler Master Elite 341 w/ 350W PSU | $100 |
| $600 |
Spent the whole afternoon building and configuring it. Debian was being lame and wouldn’t find a driver for the hardware ethernet port, so I had to find an old PCI ethernet card. Apart from that, everything went pretty smoothly.
I’m mainly using this as a sort of backup/mass storage PC, but since it’s going to be connected to the internet anyway I may as well let it run as my server in place of the old one.
I just got WordPress going, so thought I’d drop a post on my blog before carrying on (should only be samba shares left).
OK, so after all I said about never installing it on my main rig…
I did it.
Happy now, all you .*x fans?
