Home recording tips

If you didn’t know, I’m really into singing. I always dream about recording my own covers for songs. Thing is, I hardly have the time to write the music. Not to mention that I can’t really sing that well. Sure, I can hit the notes, but my voice doesn’t sound right.

Anyway, in order to get a good recording on cheap equipment, here’s a few tips.

  1. Bass boost: A voice recorded with a cheap mike is usually pretty tinny. A quick bass boost by 6-9dB usually makes it sound much richer.
  2. Reduce sharp noises: Use a negative value with amplify to reduce sharp ‘sss’ or ‘ch’ sounds. It takes a while to go through all of them, but it makes it sound much better.
  3. Learn to sing. This is probably the most important, right? :P

I might have time to make a cover for a certain song I really like (ie. both music and voice) later (but I don’t know how much later). It’s in Japanese though, so recording my singing might take a really long while, since my pronunciation isn’t quite right most of the time. Still, editing makes this sort of thing much easier to take care of :)
